How To Contribute

Features

Activity

Allows you to see the most recent activity in each Team Project.
This can be useful if you want to see which projects are still actively being worked on, for example.

Build Definitions

Allows you to track the build definitions in each Team Project, and some of their common properties. You can also bulk update or delete build definitions.
This can be useful when you want to get an overview of all the builds or want to standardize certain build properties across Team Projects.

Build Process Templates

View / Unregister

Allows you to track the build process templates that are registered for each Team Project, and which build definitions actually use them.
This can be useful when you want to get an overview of all the builds and their build process templates.

Register / Update

Allows you to register new build process templates across multiple Team Projects, optionally unregistering any other template.
This can be useful when you want to standardize on a single build process template for a selection of Team Projects in your organization.

Security

View / Delete Groups

Allows you to view and delete the security groups that are defined for each Team Project.
This can be useful when you want to get an overview of all the security groups being used.

Add / Update Group

Allows you to add or update security groups across multiple Team Projects.
This can be useful when you want to have consistent security groups or when you want to import new work item types that require certain security groups to be present.

Source Control

View Settings

Allows you to get an overview of the source control settings for each Team Project: whether or not "multiple check-out" and "get latest on check-out" are enabled, and which check-in notes are configured. Note that viewing the configured check-in policies is not supported at this time.

Update Settings

Allows you to change the source control settings across multiple Team Projects.
Note that configuring check-in policies is not supported at this time.

View Latest Changesets

Allows you to retrieve the latest changesets across Team Projects, optionally excluding changesets with specific comments.
This can be useful if you want to see which projects are still actively being worked on, for example.

Work Item Configuration - Compare

Allows you to compare the work item configuration (i.e. work item type definitions, work item categories and common and agile process configuration) used by Team Projects with work item configuration definition files on disk (e.g. from a Process Template) or from other Team Projects.
This can be useful to determine which Team Projects have been created with which Process Template, or which Team Projects have changed their work item configuration from a standard configuration.

Work Item Configuration - Work Item Types

View / Export / Delete / Edit

Allows you to get an overview of the work item type definitions across multiple Team Projects, how many work items have been created from them, and in which work item categories they are used.
You can also export their definitions to XML files, edit them in-place, and delete the work item types from the Team Projects.

Import

Allows you to validate and import new work item type definitions in existing Team Projects.
This can be useful if you want to change the work item types being used, e.g. to upgrade them from a previous version.

Search

Allows you to search for work item types and/or fields within them.
This can be useful if you want to know if certain work items or fields are present in selected Team Projects.

Work Item Configuration - Categories

View / Delete

Allows you to get an overview of all work item categories across Team Projects, and the work items that belong to them.
You can even delete work item categories from Team Projects.

Update / Import

Allows you to define work item categories across Team Projects, by creating them from scratch or by importing them from an existing Team Project.
This can be useful if you want to change work item categories or if you want to delete work item types that are part of categories (in which case you have to remove them from any categories first).

Work Item Configuration - Process Configuration

View / Export / Edit

Import

Allows you to import work item process configurations (i.e. common and agile configurations) in existing Team Projects.
This can be useful if you want to change the process configurations being used, e.g. to upgrade them from a previous version.

Transform

Allows you to transform the XML files that define the work item configuration (i.e. work item type definitions, work item categories and common and agile process configuration).
This can be useful if you want have upgraded Team Foundation Server and want to take advantage of new features.

Compatibility

TFS Team Project Manager works against TFS 2005, 2008, 2010 and 2012.

On the machine where you run the tool, you need to have Team Explorer installed; use the edition of TFS Team Project Manager that matches your version of Team Explorer.

How To Contribute

If you want to contribute any code (features or bug fixes) to this project, then you're awesome. You can do so either by submitting a patch or by requesting to become a project member.

Submitting A Patch

Submitting a patch is as easy as uploading the files you've changed and providing a desciption. You can do so on the "Source Code" tab by clicking "Upload Patch".

Although not strictly required, we would appreciate that you associate a work item (issue) with your patch so it's very obvious what your patch is supposed to do. If a work item doesn't exist yet, please don't hesitate to create one. This helps us understand the scope and impact of your patch and allow us to more easily integrate it into the main code base.

Joining The Project

If you want to contribute more formally and check source code in directly, leave a message on the discussion boards to request to be added as a member.

Here are some base rules for contributors:

Follow the philosophy of the tool.
- The tool aims to automate various tasks across Team Projects in Team Foundation Server.
- It's mostly the "across Team Projects" part that's important here: there are many tools (command-line or other) that you can use to automate certain tasks, but the big benefit here is that you can do them in bulk for a lot of projects at once.
- If your feature doesn't fit in with the mindset that it's an operation to be performed on many Team Projects, or on the Team Project Collection above it, it's probably not a good candidate.
Create a work item for every feature or bug so that it’s clear what you’re working on and what is in each release.
- Use the "Release" field in the work item to indicate which version and edition it's intended for, e.g. "TFS Team Project Manager 2012 Edition v1.4".
- If you have a feature or bug fix that supports multiple editions, please create a work item for each edition (this ensures that each release page shows all the features and bug fixes it contains).
Check in your changes in the Main branch.
- I create the releases from the different “Editions” branches, so if you put your changes in Main then I will merge them to the appropriate branch(es) depending on which Team Explorer version they support.
- If you want to manage the merges and the different branches yourself, that’s ok too but make sure everything is merged correctly and that you don't accidentally sneak something into a branch that doesn't support it (e.g. a TFS 2012 only feature ending up in the TFS 2010 branch). Make sure to build and test your merge into an edition branch before checking in.
Do not create / upload / replace releases.
- At least for now, I prefer to manage this myself because there are some things to consider, e.g. around versioning and automatic updates.
- It also allows me to keep an eye on the quality before actually releasing a new version (by code reviewing, building and testing).
